I am a member of doctor who club on DA and I really enjoy watching all the great art that pops up on there, but ever since they became a proper group, the quality has really gone down. It seems like people are just submitting anything and everything just for the hell of it or to get pageviews, and the result is that every day I have something like 50 new uploads, 99% of which will be crap such as modified screencaps, stolen press photos of the actors/characters with speech bubbles on them which usually are not funny, or really crappy sketches that look like they took 5 seconds to make.

Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of really nice art as well, but the amount of shit coming through really pisses me up the wall, and the moderator(s) don't seem to be concerned with keeping any level of quality control.

I've kept my mouth shut for a long time as the group has not really invited much in the way of feedback, and I get the feeling that people would bite my head off if I dared mention that I don't like seeing masses of shit every day, but this one just took the cake, or whatever it is they say.

Yes, because its just a modified screencap. And shoddily done (you said so yourself in the description). If you want to make a picture to show off, and a tribute to the Master, why not spend time on making it look nice?

I am not trying to start a flame war here, this is just my opinion.

well this is the best i could get it as i dont have photoshop or anything flashy, GIMP is the best i could find and i never said it was shoddily done only ruff around the edges.

Oh well forgive me, I assumed it was shoddy because of what you wrote in the description. In that case, let me tell you - this is shoddy! you said you did it rough because you were in the car? :\ why not wait until you can do it properly. That is if you care about quality control. Which is possible when using Gimp.

Ah so you don't care about quality? I see. Then we have differing opinions. The thing is, I believe that a DA gallery should be a collection of your best pieces that you're proud to display... not just any old rubbish that took a few minutes to make. But then thats just me. Maybe other people enjoy looking at rushed and shoddy work. (I can't for the life of me think why.)

Eh, I'm not getting "all crabby", nor having a go, just stating my opinion. And I've just stated my reason.

I may or may not draw your character - it depends on whether I feel like it or not or whether I like your character. I do all of my color in photoshop. After completing the basic color layer, I use a shade of the basic color for the shading. I eyeball the shade dependent on the lighting I'm going for. I use basic brushes for shading with opacity: starting with 10% opacity, then 30%, and then 50%. The deep shadows are done with 100% opacity of the shade color.

Whenever I find a snapshot in the Art Photography sections on DA, I report them. I don't want my viewing of an art gallery to be littered with the kind of stuff that is meant to go on Myspace, or Facebook.

Here's a rough guide for all artists.

If you would consider putting it in your portfolio, then it is suitable for DA. If you would not under any circumstances put it in your art portfolio, then don't put it on DA! DA IS an art portfolio, of a sort - it's an online one - that doesn't mean you shouldn't take pride in your gallery, and ONLY upload ARTWORK that you are proud of.

And yes, I know that you're on my friends list. For the record I am not singling out lordtalpadevil666, it is just that her snapshots have particularly annoyed me today - next time, it will be someone else.

The composition of the heater beside the animal shows you are a true master of photography. Its clear that you spent hours planning out this shot, setting up the lighting and getting the animal to lie down in exactly the right place to get the perfect image. What talent!
